The Day I Realized God Was Already There

I was sitting in my office near my window early one morning, coffee in hand, watching the sun try to push its way through a stubborn Michigan cloud cover. It wasn’t a dramatic moment. No thunder. No angelic choir. Just a quiet morning and a tired man trying to gather himself for the day.

But something settled in my spirit — a realization I didn’t expect:

God was already here.

Before I prayed. Before I planned. Before I worried. Before I tried to “get myself together.”

He was already here.

And that truth hit me harder than any sermon I’ve preached.

We spend so much of our lives trying to “find” God, as if He’s hiding behind the next spiritual accomplishment. We chase the next feeling, the next breakthrough, the next moment that proves He’s paying attention. But the truth is simpler and far more comforting:

He meets us where we are, not where we think we should be.

That morning didn’t change the world, but it changed me.

It reminded me that God doesn’t wait for perfect conditions. He doesn’t wait for us to be strong. He doesn’t wait for us to be holy, polished, or emotionally steady.

He steps into the ordinary and fills it with His presence.

The porch. The kitchen table. The hospital room. The car ride. The sleepless night. The moment you whisper, “Lord, I don’t even know what to pray.”

He’s already there.

And maybe that’s what someone needs today — not a miracle, not a sign, not a breakthrough… just the reminder that God is already here, in the middle of your real life, your real mess, your real questions.

You don’t have to climb a mountain to reach Him. You don’t have to earn your way into His presence. You don’t have to pretend you’re okay.

You just have to notice.

Because the God who was there before the sun broke through the clouds on my porch… is the same God who is sitting with you right now.

Already present. Already working. Already holding what you haven’t even spoken yet.

Sometimes the greatest spiritual discovery isn’t that God showed up — it’s realizing He never left.
